Oil painting has been the most common technique for many centuries, spreading from Europe across to the rest of the world. In the recent past, oil paintings on canvas came with greater flexibility, denser hues and a wide range from light to dark. Oil is a much older media compared to acrylic and is hence preferred by a lot of collectors due to its richer colours and is also supposed to last for hundreds of years provided it is maintained well.
Most of the old works of master artists in the past were done with oil paints and was the preferred choice for most of the artists. Painting with oil colors is also a longer and patient process. Some of the most famous works include Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, The Starry Night and Irises by Vincent Van Gogh, The Kiss by Gustav Klimt, Girl with the Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer, Guernica by Pablo Picasso and The Night Watch by Rembrandt van Rijn.
Oil paintings will have to be lightly dusted and cleaned from time to time and during the process of making the work enough time needs to be given to the layers to dry to avoid moisture related problems.
