About H R Das

I began with the thought of Lord Shiva’s vehicle Nandi when I started on this series. I have tried to depict a lot in these paintings. My mythological bull has many poses and many different expressions as well - there are some that look as if they are laughing, some are pensive, others are dominant and full of character. I want the bulls to tell different stories through different avatars. Some of my paintings have religious symbols in the background, like the Swastika, Lotus and Lord Ganesha since I feel the background is like a stage setting in front of which my characters perform, an intricate tapestry to highlight the interactions between the main players of the magnum opus. Some may say that I have taken a common animal and given it a heroic status that it takes on an almost human persona. But one can relate to the beast’s agony, its joy of life, its anger, and one can also fear it.

H.R. Das’s compelling portrayals of bulls and village life celebrate the raw power and poignant spirit of rural India. Through vibrant compositions and commanding animal figures, he brings myth, culture, and emotion into conversation on his canvases.

H.R. Das is a contemporary Indian artist whose work has become synonymous with the majestic bull - a figure he has elevated from the ordinary to the iconic. Das brings an unflinching gaze and deep empathy to his depictions of rural life. His bulls are not just animals; they are avatars of strength, struggle, and pride, pulsating with vitality and emotion. With bold lines and dynamic forms, he captures their muscular tension, their grace, and their almost-human expressions, be it in agony, defiance, or exuberance. Das’s distinctive style and recurring symbolism reflect a deep reverence for the bull’s role in Indian agrarian culture and mythology. At once grounded and exalted, his work straddles the line between realism and allegory.

But Das’s genius doesn’t stop at the figure. His canvases are choreographed like stage plays, where each backdrop is not filler, but narrative. The intricately textured backgrounds hold space like quiet witnesses - mud walls, muted motifs, fragments of village life, inviting us to look closer, to hear the hum of rural India. Through his work, the commonplace becomes heroic, and the rural so often ignored demands reverence.
