Kalighat Paintings

Having it’s origins in the vicinity of the Kalighat Kali temple, West Bengal, Kolkata in the 19th century, Kalighat paintings were sold as religious souvenirs to visitors. In the early 19th, these were long 11 inches scroll paintings done on cloth called pattas depicting scenes from the mythological epics and artists travelling to villages singing and narrating called as patuas. With the passage of time, Kalighat painting at it’s core is a story with artists not only residing with gods and goddesses as it’s themes but also portraying secular personalities, socio-political themes, crimes as well as talked about the independence movement. Simplicity, clean bold lines, minimalistic background, basic color combinations, bold dyes, and transparency are some peculiar characteristics wherein the charm lies in the depiction of the everyday life of Bengali Babu and Bibi.

FAQs for Kalighat Paintings

Kalighat paintings are a type of Indian folk art that originated in the 19th century. These paintings are usually brightly colored and depict scenes from Hindu mythology. However artists trained in the Kalighat style are also creating works that depict the everyday life with touches of humour, sarcasm and irony.

Purchasing a Kalighat painting can be a bit tricky since there are quite a few artists who practise this form. We have curated some of the best contemporary artists who practise this form. Here are a few tips to buy Kalighat paintings.

Kalighat paintings usually depict scenes from Hindu mythology or everyday life. If you do not connect with these subjectss, it might be difficult to purchase a painting that you will be happy with.

Another important factor to consider when purchasing a Kalighat painting is the quality of the painting. Kalighat paintings are known for their use of bold colors and detailed brushwork. Make sure to inspect the painting closely to ensure that the colors are vibrant and the brushwork is precise.

Finally, you will also need to take into account the price of the painting. Kalighat paintings are quite affordable forms of art but can vary slightly in price depending on the artist

There are a few reasons to buy Kalighat paintings. The first is that they are unique and not mass-produced. Each painting is hand-painted, which means that no two are exactly alike. This makes them special and one-of-a-kind. Additionally, Kalighat paintings are created by artisans who have passed down their skills and techniques for generations.
