About Jyothsna Bhatt
Born in Mandvi, Gujarat, Jyotsna Bhatt (1940–2020) is a pioneering Indian ceramic artist.
Bhatt studied at Mumbai’s Sir J J School of Art for a year before enrolling in 1958 to study sculpture at the Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) in Baroda, where she was tutored by the notable sculptor Sankho Chaudhuri. In the mid-1960s, she traveled to the United States to join her husband who was there on a Fulbright Scholarship, eventually attending the Brooklyn Museum Art School to continue her ceramic studies under Jolyon Hofsted.
Shortly thereafter, the couple returned to India to settle in Vadodara, where they became faculty members of MSU from 1972 onwards. Bhatt retired as head of the department of ceramics in 2002.
Held solo shows and group shows in India and abroad. Have curated, conducted and participated in many workshops at national and international level.
Jyotsna explored printmaking from Mimesis Print Studio and her work (Titled: Cats & Pots) remains the first and last print.
