About Artist

Gopal Samantray is a contemporary Indian artist whose emotionally charged canvases confront humanitys fractured relationship with nature. Drawing from his lived experience in forested famine-stricken regions his work captures the tension between natures sublime beauty and the harsh consequences of ecological neglect. Samantrays art doesnt simply depict nature it grieves for it. A painter shaped as much by memory as by his environment Samantray channels a deep ecological sensitivity into his work forged during his childhood spent near famine-hit forests occupied by Naxalites. Those formative years etched into him a visceral understanding of both the grandeur and fragility of the natural world. In his practice Samantray addresses the uncomfortable truth that while the world talks of progress we are steadily unraveling the threads that bind us to our only home. His visual language is direct yet poetic animals severed from their habitats forests fading into abstraction skies heavy with an unspoken sorrow. His canvases pulse with a quiet urgency echoing the anxieties of a planet in distress. Yet within that ache there is reverence a recognition of nature not just as a subject but as a sentient presence being lost. Samantray does not paint to accuse. He paints to remember and to compel others to remember as well. His work is not a condemnation but a quiet reckoning a way of bearing witness to what has been lost and what still remains. In every piece lies an invitation to feel the ache of absence to confront the cost of human disregard and perhaps to rediscover a more conscious reverent way of belonging to the Earth.
