About Gopal Samantray

Born on 3rd July 2015

In the name of progression, we have in many ways regressed. We are slowly tearing apart the one home we were gifted with. As issues like global warming and deforestation rise and ring alarm bells, I notice a sense of anxiety that grows within me. My paintings are reflections of this anxiety. They are a representation of our handy work looming large against the bright future we claim to foresee. My paintings present animals lost and detached from their natural spaces emphasising the fact that mankind has crossed all lines and wishes to alter nature as per his need and greed.

Gopal Samantray, a distinguished artist with a B.F.A and M.F.A from B.K College of Art, Odisha, delves into the complexities of our environmental predicament through his profound artworks. In a world ostensibly progressing, Samantray argues that we're regressing, ruthlessly dismantling the precious gift of our singular home.

With global warming and deforestation sounding alarms, his canvases echo an underlying anxiety. The artist's brushstrokes vividly depict the consequences of human actions—animals adrift from their natural habitats, symbolizing mankind's relentless intrusion into nature. Samantray's oeuvre, inspired by his immersive experiences in a famine-stricken, Naxalite-occupied forest during his formative years, encapsulates the dichotomy of nature's beauty and horror. Through over 15 group shows and a solo exhibition, his work, recognized by organizations like TREE and Rashtriya Lalit Kala Kendra, Orissa, embodies a poignant commentary on the contemporary ecological crisis.
