If you’ve lived or visited South India, especially in the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu & Andhra Pradesh the sight of the bull/ox is adorned in layers of beautifully colored layers of clothes and bells accompanied by the sounds of the ottu/nadaswaram wouldn’t be an uncommon one. The ‘Gangireddu’ or the ‘Boom Boom Cow’ as they are called in different states often accompany Gangireddulavaru during the season of Sankranti & Pongal as they visit homes and collect alms, believed to bring good luck and prosperity. These oxen are also trained to play along with their masters as they narrate stories. Browse through our collection of Gangireddu paintings by artists
Mohammaed Osman who paints these oxen in bright colored backgrounds matching their attire and
Iruvan Karunakaran who captures the spirit of these animals in the streets of Tamil Nadu.
