+About The Artwork
A Radiant Ode to the Sacred City Rich hues of saffron and gold burst forth from my canvas, illuminating an awe-inspiring scene - the ghats of Varanasi bathed in the warm glow of dawn. I seek to capture the divine luminosity that permeates this ancient city, the spiritual heartland of India. My brush strokes swirl and dance, evoking the chanting of Vedic hymns and the tinkling of temple bells. The many-tiered ghats come to life in vivid detail. Pilgrims descend the steps to immerse themselves in the Ganges, the river of liberation. Holy men in ochre robes meditate in shaded alcoves. Incense smoke rises from ornate shrines perched on the riverbank. My artwork pays homage to Varanasi's incomparable heritage. I paint delicate minarets and towering temple spires rising above the cityscape. The ochre walls of ashrams glow in the morning light. The people are the soul of Varanasi. I fill my canvas with the colors and costumes of this living tapestry - saffron-clad sadhus, local shopkeepers, foreign travelers. All have come to this magical place to be washed clean in the Ganges, to find peace at the Spiritual Ghats. My artwork seeks to capture the radiant spirit of Varanasi, the Luminous City. In brilliant hues and evocative details, I strive to do justice to this timeless place, this confluence of the sacred and the divine.
Artist

Ananda Das
Contemporary Artist
Ananda Das is a contemporary Indian painter renowned for his command of light and shadow and his ability to reveal the sacred within the everyday. Born to artist Lakshmi Narayan Das, he chose early to carve an independent path beyond traditional Bengal School training, a decision that shaped his distinctive visual language across charcoal, acrylic, oil, watercolour, and mixed media.
His work spans urban narratives, spiritual landscapes, and powerful animal studies. From Kolkata’s rickshaw pullers to the rituals of Varanasi, Ananda’s chiaroscuro transforms ordinary moments into poetic, timeless scenes. His paintings bridge tradition and modernity, carrying a universal resonance that speaks across cultures.
With over three decades of practice and more than a hundred solo exhibitions, Ananda’s art has been showcased at major venues and is housed in prominent collections including the British High Commission, World Bank, Reliance Industries, and Tata Group. As a mentor and evolving practitioner, he continues to push the boundaries of contemporary Indian art.
