Having it’s origins in the vicinity of the Kalighat Kali temple, West Bengal, Kolkata in the 19th century, Kalighat paintings were sold as religious souvenirs to visitors.
In the early 19th, these were long 11 inches scroll paintings done on cloth called pattas depicting scenes from the mythological epics and artists travelling to villages singing and narrating called as patuas. With the passage of time, Kalighat painting at it’s core is a story with artists not only residing with gods and goddesses as it’s themes but also portraying secular personalities, socio-political themes, crimes as well as talked about the independence movement.
