This work incorporates elements that suggest potential germination, creation, re- birth and life. On the left panel, the bindu in ochre yellow is the sun – the energizing, life- giving source, complemented by its counterpart, that is the blue horizontal lines symbolic of water, which according to Raza, is a feminine entity, thus representing the life bearing element.
 
The central vertical panel, consisting of black inverted triangles pointing downwards, symbolic of the yoni or the womb bearing life, paired with their counterparts – upward triangles, collectively reverberating with potential germination of life. 
 
The right square represents the coiled serpent/Naga, symbolic of rebirth, rejuvenation and cycle of life. Further a dot inside expresses male and female polarity. In Hinduism, the midpoint in a circle, is the bindu - a spark of life (masculine) within the cosmic world. The female entity is considered to be the ultimate bearer of life, and the purusha just participating.

For Raza, Bindu is in visual art what Aum is in India music. Time and again, he found himself coming back to nature and its expression, not in ways that the eyes see, but to its very core being – the Seed, the unit which contains all essential potentialities that can develop in the course of time in the life of plants, animals, humans. Here the black circle signifies the ‘bija’ or ‘beej’ – the life giving source and the starting point of creation. 

 

Further the faint lines forming the recurring inverted triangles and the placement of the bija between them represent the womb, female fertility, evoking the budding of a plant from the seed.

Panchtatva meaning the five fundamental elements of life: Bhoomi (earth), Jala (water), Agni (fire), Vayu (air) and Akasha(sky). The colors representing these primarily make up his color palette (black, red, blue, yellow and white).
 
The black bindu placed in the centre of this work represents the concentration of all the energy and creation, and the four coloured areas surrounding the bindu, represent these elements of nature, and their equal divisions represent the balance in the nature. Further the left panel houses all the female elements of nature (or the Prakriti), such as an inverted triangle, representing germination and budding of life, further two Bindus in red and black placed on top of the inverted triangle is symbolic of the polarity in nature, the male and female entities, coming together for creation of life. In the right panel, the artist alludes the male aspect of nature (or the Purusha) using a variation of the Bindu, an elongated oval, housing five coloured bindus. All these colored Bindus represent five fundamentals of life and their individual representations in forms of Bindus, symbolize that they are their complete and balanced individual entities.

1970s onwards, the bija or Bindu in Raza’s works symbolized both the starting and ending point of the cosmos. Here the visual journey begins outwards, dissipating from the central black Bindu and goes through the journey of elements of life, germination and creation. Raza explains that at the heart of his unique visual vocabulary lie the five key symbols of life namely fire, water, earth, wind and sky, all closely woven together with the key components of the cosmos, such as female energy, germination, polarity etc.

 
A five foot square fragmented into twenty five panels, this work incorporates elements of creation, potential germination and their variations using both male and female entities, such as Prakriti- Purusha represented using the downward and upward triangles, an elongated Bindu with pointed ends signifying the Yoni and the coiled serpents or Kundalini, both representing female polarity; the Panchtattva,the sun and lastly the Bindu or variation of Bindu resonating concentric rings, symbolic of movement, creation.

Kriti meaning creation and Prakriti meaning the conditions at the beginning of the creation or the natural state of existence. 

Bija or Bindu symbolizes both, the starting of the creation and the creation itself, Kriti – Prakriti. Symbolic of the Raza’s fixation on the conception of germination or ankuran, here the bija is encased within a diagonally fashioned square, which is visually made of up two triangles, one pointing upwards, which represents Purusha or the male forces; other pointing downwards, symbolic of Yoni or the female energies of the universe. It is in the union of these two opposites that bija thrives, and further pollinates, to the rest of the canvas, which consists of number of inverted triangles, seemingly ready to bear further creations/germination.

Satpura, the title of this monumental work from 1984, refers to the range of hills towering over the Narmada river, on whose forested banks Raza was born. In this piece, Raza’s abstract expressionism gives way to a more controlled network of intersecting lines and planes. The colours used are predominantly related to the earth: graduated sienna, yellow ochre, red and brown, symbolizing the majestic mountains. These colours are highlighted by touches of green representing vegetation, and white and yellow lines evoking the sky. Even as the triangles formed by his diagonals are reminiscent of the Satpura range of Central India and are reflective of Raza’s oeuvre of using geometry and cosmological symbology to communicate his vision of nature and universe.

For Raza, nature always remained a primary source, indeed the only source of inspiration.
 
In this piece, Raza explicitly recalls seventeenth century miniatures from Malwa and Mewar in Rajasthan whose colours and structure deeply influenced his work.
 
The color and construction of this piece also shows the transition between Raza’s gestural phase and the emergence of bindu in his work. Here, his expressionist strokes are limited to the lower panel of the canvas, predominantly in yellow lines, red and sienna further highlighted by large patches of green representing vegetation. The upper two quadrants have a more controlled network of intersecting triangles and strong horizontal bands of colours. The bindu and the colours adjacent to it convey the five fundamental elements of life – earth, water, fire, sky and air. The frame that encases these panels is both reminiscent of traditional miniature painting and indicative of Raza’s shifts towards geometric symbology.

A seminal work, ‘Saurashtra’ by Raza was done in the early ‘80s suggesting a blend of his two distinctive styles of paintings, one being his gestural strokes, and other being his Abstractionism. The format of this work, and the virtual frame that encases the work reminds us of the seventeenth century miniature paintings of Rajasthan, filled using a wide spectrum of warm colours, such as ochre yellow, saffron, crimson red, burnt sienna, pale greens and black, all collectively narrative of hot, dusty and vegetative India. Lower half of the canvas has more controlled and short brush strokes and network of intersecting triangles whereas the upper half has wider and thicker patches of shades of sienna and green.

The image of Raza’s work after 1953 is difficult to define. His paintings still showed houses, trees, spires and other elements of landscape emerging out of colours, which are their true essence. During this period the subject was irrelevant but the image persisted, creating the experience of the scene only using colours in gestural brushwork. Here the artist suggests a French provincial town bathed in sunlight, with few white houses, discernible against the vegetation on the slope against the red background. Through its burning red sky and autumnal colours sparsely spread across the entire work, it tells of new spontaneity and raw energy and style informing the influence of French Expressionism.
