Anup Kumar Chand

Rooted in the traditional jhotis, murujas, and clay idols of my home in Bhograi, Balasore district of Odisha, my paintings evolve into expansive spaces where reality, fantasy, and subconscious elements converge. Animals, especially tigers, along with plants and symbolic figures, dominate my canvases, often infused with the essence of Indian miniature traditions. Through vibrant yet soothing palettes, off-centre narratives, and spontaneous imagery, I strive to create theatrical, immersive worlds that reflect identity, time, and evolving concepts while preserving a sense of renewal and individuality.

Anup Kumar Chand is an artist who paints not only what he sees, but what he dreams and remembers. His work is rooted in the landscapes and stories of Odisha, where folk tales, village life, and childhood reveries mingle, and driven by an instinctive pull towards the fantastical and the poetic. His worlds are populated by tigers, moons, villages, waters, and wandering figures that seem to hover between wakefulness and sleep. These are not just decorative images; they are dreamscapes where the wild and the gentle coexist, where a tiger can be both menace and guardian, and where every creature carries a quiet, mysterious purpose. Colour, for Chand, is not merely surface it is emotion. He saturates his canvases with luminous hues and fluid transitions, turning skies, fields, and bodies into charged fields of feeling. The scenes he paints feel like remembered myths: part personal, part collective, inviting the viewer to enter, roam, and recognise fragments of their own inner stories.
