Description

This great poem, with all of it's seventeen volumns is believed to be KALIDASA'S, the Poet-laureate, first epic."The Birth of the WarGod" is widely described as a religious poem for the characters include Siva, Parvati, Kartikeya (Kumar) and a plethora of other Gods and demigods. But though all it's characters are supernatural, the atmosphere of the poem is essentially secular. The whole epic is a fine picture of a distinctive Indian household. The poem ends with the death of Tarakasur in single combat with KUMARA.*The mastery of language in the last three stanzas quoted, is so remarkable that it must impress even the reader who knows no Sanskrit. With brilliant use of assonance and alliteration Kalidasa has wedded sound to sense in a way rarely achieved in the literature of the World. Nirghaata ghoso giri- shringa- shaatano ghano'mbaraashaa- kuharodarambharih babhuva bhumnaa shruti-bhiti-bhedanah, prakopi-kaal-aarjita-garji-tarjanah || Skhalan-mahebham praptat-turungamam parasparaashlishta-janam samantatah, praksubhyaad-ambhodi-vibhinna-bhudharaad, balam dviso'bhud avni-prakampaat || Ordhvikrataasyaa ravi-datta-dratayah, sametya sarve sura-vidvisah purah, shvaanah svarena shravanaanta-shaatinaa, mithe rudaantah karunena niryayuh|| As quoted by A. L. Basham & William Jones
