Personal Statement

Nostalgia for the past, search for his roots, and a keen but poetic eye for the present reflect in his art. Jayanta is a figurative painter who works towards creating a density of composition through form and color. He believes in experimenting with lines, forms and color to reach his reality, while tackling the problems of composition in his own way. His search is for an individual expression of his own reality, a search for his own language in art. His search for his roots took him back to the city of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India where he now lives and works.
Music has played a great part in Jayanta's life. He was fortunate to learn from Imdadkhani or Itawa School, Gwalior School, and Maihar School masters equally. The only Bansuri (Bamboo Flute) disciple of the all time great Sitar Maestro, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Jayanta had the unique distinction of being selected by the great maestro to play at his 75th Birth Anniversary at Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA. Awarded the Title of ‘SURMANI’ (Jewel of Music) by Sur Sringar Samsad, Mumbai , he performed regularly for All India Radio till his travel to the US, and on stage at prestigious venues, including Bharat Bhavan-Bhopal, Birla Academy-Kolkata, Museum of Natural History-New York City, Rutgers University, Mumbai and Bhuvaneshwar. Jayanta learnt music from Pandit Balasaheb Poochwale, last living decendent of Gwalior Gharana, and Pandit Ravi Garud of Indore, a senior disciple of Bansuri Pioneer Pannalal Ghosh's disciple and son-in-law Pandit Devendra Murdeshwar.
Jayanta also had a successful career as an Information Technology professional, and became a specialist in Business Intelligence and Datawarehousing, working in senior positions with Mercedes Benz, Lucent Technologies, Philips, Schering Plough Pharmaceuticals, Health and Hospitals Corporation-City of New York, Cognizant Technologies Ltd., JK Industries Ltd., HEG Limited etc.
All these influences give his art a unique color, form, intensity, and richness that make him somewhat of a renaissance man in today's world. A self-taught artist, Jayanta is equally adept at Portraiture, Figurative Abstracts, or Drawings, as with various different mediums of Oil, Acrylic, Oil Pastel, Crayons, Ink, or Graphite.
